‘Empty Continent’, the solo project by Mexican artist Luis Hidalgo, is a research on the digital era and the endless possibilities it has brought to the artistic practice. It is also a contemporary approach to archiving. By compiling images related to ancient and contemporary Mexican culture taken from the internet, and then merging them together, Hidalgo develops a new symbology that becomes abstract, a phantom of what is once was. In the process of subliming the final result of these mix, he makes his way back from the digital, to the analogical, to the tradition of the textile, both of utilitarian nature but also poetic.
