Kajetan Berlin introduces the radically subtle and distinct position of Jan Wawrzyniak to an international audience. He draws pictures that fundamentally question our idea of what a picture is. For Art Brussels, he contrasts his own pictures with an electrostatic object by Erich Reusch. While Reusch’s object is conceptually interactive and participative in reacting to the movements of viewers, as well as the conditions of the surrounding space, in Jan Wawrzyniak’s pictures, as Robert Kudielka notes, there is no ‘subject’, but rather a ‘motif’, or motive in the active sense of the word: it sets the observer in motion.
Erich Reusch is unfortunately not able to experience this exhibition: he died on 29 December, 2019.
