Sapar Contemporary

Produced for the Mire Program by Geneva’s Fonds cantonal d’art contemporain, ‘Subway’, a drawing and animation project by Phoebe Boswell, was created for Geneva’s new train station. In the artist’s own words, ‘The railway is a symbol of movement, of migration, of connecting place and people. The railway too, historically, has been a symbol of boundary, of border, of polarity… Borders need to be porous, differences must be acknowledged and celebrated, and we all need to be able and willing to see each other as we are.’ The video works consists of montages of drawn portraits of people from around the world. The looping technology allows the public to think how they themselves interact with others, which interactions make them uncomfortable, and which fill them with joy.
