Monitor was founded by Paola Capata in the fall of 2003. Since the project’s inception, the gallery has focused on proposing to artists spaces and contexts that allow them an experimental approach to exhibitions. During its first years, its program was tuned to international, emerging artists, exploring diverse practices from sculpture to installation-based work, with the largest segment dedicated to video. Since the 2010s, Monitor has broadened its attention to other media, especially painting. In 2014, Paola Capata opened a pop-up space in New York: Monitor Studio. After that experience, the gallery opened a branch in Lisbon in 2017. In September 2019, Monitor opened its third venue in Pereto, Italy.
