Installation of works by Tomás Saraceno

Andersen’s is pleased to announce the presentation of a unique solo installation of works by renowned Argentinian artist Tomás Saraceno. This installation of works is presented for the KPMG Lounge on occasion of Art Brussels 2020.

Born in Argentina in 1973, Tomás Saraceno’s oeuvre is an ongoing research, informed by the fields of art, architecture, natural sciences, astrophysics and engineering. His floating sculptures, community projects and interactive installations propose and explore new, sustainable ways of inhabiting and sensing the environment

Throughout the lounge, Saraceno’s signature works on paper will line the walls. Works on paper Semi-social mapping of Arp 242 by a solo Cyrtophora citricola – one week and a solo Nephila senegalensis – one week (2016), Semi-social mapping of Pisces II by a duet of Cyrtophora citricola- three weeks (2016) and Semi-social mapping of Eridanus II by a solo Cyrtophora citricola – one week and a solo Cyrtophora citricola – three weeks (2016), are each made in collaboration with two different spiders, some even belonging to different species. In bringing together genera that natively are unlikely to collaborate, spider collaborators bring forth hybrid spider/webs created in multispecies gatherings. These works on paper offer a different way to read and interpret the architecture of the spider/web: as a topological map of movements and temporalities that trace the intricate complexities of these silken sculptures.

Central to the presentation is Zonal Harmonic 2N 100/9, a hanging sculpture from 2017. Situated within the artist’s interest in astronomical and cosmological subjects, the work presents orbits held together purely by their mutual tension. The work is informed by elements such as the variations of speed and orbits and the temporality of outer space phenomena – this seemingly fragile balance is, in fact, what defines the movement of celestial bodies. The constantly shifting structures of cosmological dynamics is what informs Saraceno’s fascination with systems of interconnectedness.
