SOLO artist: Gavin Turk

Gavin Turk reimagines Gerhard Richter’s photorealistic Kerze paintings by capturing the candles the moment they’re extinguished; their smoky trails are frozen in permanence. Turk––a figurehead of the Young British Artists whose work often confronts authorship with cunning humour and poignancy––plays with authenticity and touches on notions of memento mori: “The candle is a metaphysical symbol, it is a clock, it is a guide, the lit flame is a burning energetic sprite, putting it out creates smoke, an afterlife, a holy ghost, a veil, a messenger.”
