Ceysson & Bénétière

Stand: a15 & a17

PRIME

Founded in Saint-Étienne in 2006 by François Ceysson and Loïc Bénétière, the gallery is now based in Luxembourg, Paris and New York. The gallery represents the French Supports/Surfaces movement, as well as international artists as Sadie Laska, Florian Pugnaire & David Raffini, Mounir Fatmi, Aurélie Pétrel, Bernard Venet and more. Ceysson & Bénétière is delighted to present Onde (2018), by Florian Pugnaire and David Raffini. This sculpture was inspired by a monumental work of art exhibited at the Jardin des Tuileries during the 2017 Hors les Murs FIAC. While time sequencing is specific to cinema and the chrono-photographic investigations of Eadweard Muybridge and Etienne-Jules Marey, it can also relate to the field of painting. One inevitably thinks of Futurism, but the characteristic dimensions of this new piece, along with the geometric deconstruction of motion, mainly bring a Cubist-inspired work to mind, as imagined by Marcel Duchamp as he painted Nude Descending a Staircase in 1912. For Onde, 24 stainless steel sheets were lined up and progressively distorted, like images contained in a single second of film, evoking the impact of a shock wave.
