Choi & Lager unites Asian and international artists at different stages in their careers, working in a variety of media. What they share is an attitude to experiment, encapsulating a whole spectrum of ideas from fields of art history, media theory, politics, literature and culture. 'Saisir l’impossible (cutting)' represents a body which is duplicated to embrace itself in its arms. To realise this impossible assembly, Daniel Firman scans the body of the model twice. Firstly, the model imagines holding his duplicated body in his arms. Then the model takes the place of this imagined body. The postures are solely according to the model’s memory, without any guidance from his past actions. The ‘cutting’ in the title intervenes as a last gesture of sculpture, recessing the material and fragmenting bodies to keep only the perfect vision of the action of seizing the impossible. With these three new, impossible choreographed gestures, which are only achievable through sculpture and could never exist in reality, Firman presents a new development in his sculpture practice.
