WHEN WORDS BECOME FORM
For the past five years, the “Art(s) & écriture(s)” transdisciplinary module for students pursuing a Master’s degree at ENSAV La Cambre has examined the wide array of contemporary forms of writing in art. Among the hundred or so students that we have accompanied since 2018 in developing a “language object”, we selected thirty (most of whom have already graduated and now actively participate in the emerging art scene) on the basis of the high standard of their artistic work featuring the text. They hail from various disciplines covered by the curricula: book and paper design, drawing, photography, scenography, textile design, typography, ceramics, urban space, text and literature, painting, engraving and printmaking. The artworks exhibited also reflect the wide spectrum of mediums and practices incorporating writing in visual forms today.

Michel François – Contre Nature
A look at 40 years of artistic practice by Belgian artist Michel François, from early work to several new creations he made especially for Bozar. Using sculpture, photography, video, painting and installation, the artist creates a web of shifting connections between his artworks. Style Congo: Heritage & Heresy
Art Nouveau is the starting point from which the exhibition Style Congo: Heritage & Heresy explores how Congo was represented during the international exhibitions held between 1885 and 1958. Through contemporary artistic and architectural interventions and archives from the CIVA collection, the exhibition curated by Sammy Baloji, Estelle Lecaille, Silvia Franceschini, and Nikolaus Hirsch explores the politics of representation and cultural appropriation. It examines the traces of colonisation in Brussels and in the Congolese urban landscape and proposes a decolonial redefinition of private and public spaces. An Exhibition organized by CIVA and Twenty Nine Studio. In collaboration with KANAL – Centre Pompidou, in the framework of Living Traces.

Zéphir Busine, Designer.
The monographic exhibition devoted to Zéphir Busine (1916 – 1976) will present his work as a designer and decorative artist. Although he is best known for his pictorial work, described as lyrical abstraction, he was also active in many other creative fields. From the 1950s to the 1970s, he was in turn an illustrator, ceramist, sculptor, stained glass artist and decorator. The ambition of this monograph is to reveal a work that is still little known to the general public and its impact on the history of design in Belgium.

Laure Prouvost, artist living and working in Molenbeek inaugurates the series with a colourful composition of images and messages directed to the city and its inhabitants. In Prouvost’s immersive and captivating installations where film, sculpture, found objects, performance, and language are often combined, the artist draws on personal memories and artistic and literary references as well as elements of fiction. She disrupts linear narratives and the expected associations between words, images, and meanings.

La Loge*

Infinite Play
La Loge hosts a new exhibition by Marina Pinsky, which aims to level the social hierarchies built into the site’s historical architecture as a masonic temple. Eschewing the symbolic languages of the building’s past use, she overlays an entirely different complex of symbols, rituals and games. The exhibition’s central hall is rebuilt as a space for open-ended conversation. The arrangement of the interior is centered around a group of digitally embroideries based on an early 20th century proposal from American industrialists for a thirteen month calendar. In our present, these meditations on divisions of time, and their arbitrariness, become a ground for light-hearted imaginings of new social dynamics.

Spilliaert – The Early Years
In 2022, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium received a unique edition of ‘Théâtre’ by Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949). The three volumes bring together some of his writings for theatre. No fewer than 348 original drawings by Ostend artist Léon Spilliaert (1881-1946) illustrate the whole. This focus exhibition places Spilliaert’s illustrations for ‘Théâtre’ in context. They are presented with a selection of the artist’s early works from the collection of the Museum.

Johan Van Mullem – For Love’ s(n)ake
Johan Van Mullem’s work seems to emerge from art history’s underlying memoirs : secular themes, portraits and landscapes each take place in his œuvre and radiate with a dazzling yet elusive presence, endowing it with a religious, even initiatory aura. At the very heart of the Old Masters Museum, some 50 drawings, paintings and sculptures come together in a duality that tends to reconcile our dark side with the hope that inevitably drives us.

Susan Meiselas – Mediations
“How do you work as a photographer? There’s always this uncomfortable, unequal balance of power. How do you break that down? How can it become a dialogue?”  – Susan Meiselas
For nearly five decades, Magnum photographer Susan Meiselas (US, 1948) has been using her camera to bear witness and to connect with people. Meiselas has travelled the world and focused on a wide range of subjects, from the sex industry to war and human rights violations. melanie bonajo – When the body says Yes
When the body says Yes is an immersive video installation by melanie bonajo. The artist believes that touch can be a powerful remedy for the loneliness that has become endemic in our society. bonajo brought together a group of international genderqueer people, many with a bicultural identity, to cast a collective spell in the form of a pleasure-positive camp where “skinship” is celebrated. Do you know the sensual dimensions of your “No”? How do you feel when your body says “Yes”? When the body says Yes is a gentle invitation to let yourself be transported on a journey of discovery.

The Museum of Fine Arts Ghent is presenting the first ever monographic exhibition on Theodoor Rombouts (1597-1637), the virtuoso of Flemish Caravaggism. Rombouts was an established figure in the Antwerp art world. The exhibition reveals Rombouts’ artistic personality and places his work in a new perspective.

Stéphan Gladieu. North Korea
Stéphan Gladieu sought to make his own approach to the people of North Korea. During various stays in Pyongyang and in the Korean countryside, the French photographer took a fresh look at a country in the making. He did so without preconceptions, without militantism and without denunciation, succeeding in unravelling the individual from within the group. Stephan Gladieu indeed endeavoured to define a genuine typology, crossing men, women and children, trades and professions, in their workplace and during their leisure time.

Friends in a Field: Conversations with Raoul De Keyser
Over the course of his nearly five-decade career, the Belgian artist Raoul De Keyser (1930–2012) created a group of artworks that bridged the concrete mysteries of the everyday and the intangible world of abstraction. “Friends in a Field: Conversations with Raoul De Keyser” takes the artist’s radical painterly practice as the beginning of a conversation with a diverse group of artists — both living and dead — whose works share a sensibility and attentiveness to the fragile intangibility of the world. In their paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, these artists join De Keyser in presenting the world back to us as a kind of abstract visual poetry.

Unreadiness
Unreadiness connects works by Jan Vercruysse (1948-2018), Nel Aerts (1987) and John Murphy (1945), artists from two different generations who develop their own universe that draws on the private feelings of the maker. At the same time, they make use of an art-historical and literary discourse full of iconographic symbols. In a sensual game of concealing and reveiling, the artworks bear witness to creation itself.
